The Design program at Lund University prominently emphasizes sustainable design principles and practices while maintaining a commitment to excellence and innovation in design.

In the pursuit of my master's degree project, conducted independently but in collaboration with the reputable Swedish design manufacturer Nordgröna, I explored the potential of

bio-based composites. The central inquiry guiding this exploration was: What if we could reduce or eliminate plastics and other environmental pollutants from our surroundings?

Plastic?

How do we get rid of

The primary challenge in the Master's Thesis revolved around addressing the recycling or upcycling limitations of plastic, particularly in Composite Materials. The process is intricate and expensive. Bio Composites emerge as a potentially viable alternative to resin and plastic-based materials. Employing natural binders aims to establish a healthier and more sustainable approach. The project initiated with a Material Exploration, with mycelium and mushroom-based materials standing out as noteworthy options.

What is Mycelium ?

It is, in fact, the largest organism on Earth, or in other words, the root system of mushrooms. While most individuals are familiar with the visible part of the mushroom, known as the fruiting body, the true essence of the mushroom exists underground. This hidden network, referred to as the mycelium or the "internet of the forest," holds significant importance. By extracting the mycelium from the earth and combining it with plant-based fibers, a valuable material can be obtained through controlled growth.

For optimal Mycelium Composite growth, it's essential to get the mix just right. This means a precise combination of 50% water, 30% substrate, and the addition of robust plant fibers for structural integrity. To boost Mycelium development, nutrients are key, and commonly, flour is used to accelerate the process. Notably, the thesis explored innovative approaches, repurposing various waste products like used beer mash and coffee grounds through upcycling methods.

Grow it yourself and
make it your way!

This material offers significant advantages, similar to conventional composite materials. It allows for the adjustment of properties to meet specific design requirements and minimizes the need for extensive post-processing. In the mycelium growing process, it's worth noting that the mycelium plays a key role in binding the substrate and water, contributing to the material's structural integrity. The final touch is the addition of pigment, not only for color but also to avoid the expense of a separate and costly color coating. This approach gives us a multi-sensorial material.

During the collaboration with Nordgröna, we explored intriguing ways to integrate such a material into future workspaces. The well-being of people in office settings faces considerable challenges, with various factors impacting their efficiency and mood. To tackle a significant pain point, we delved into tracking current trends, where the incorporation of biophilic and playful elements emerged as noteworthy. Workspaces are evolving into mature playgrounds, aiming to address and enhance the overall work environment.
Enhancements like these would boost individuals' creativity and efficiency, providing them with a canvas to shape their own workspaces. This approach leads the way toward modularity and playfulness in the work process.

Playfulness & Modularity

The modular shelf system will allow for customization and flexibility, enabling users to create a space that meets their specific needs. Additionally, the playful design elements will foster a sense of play and exploration within the office environment, promoting a positive workplace culture. But how could such a modular display shelving system look like ?

French Cleat Hooking

Giving a classic a makeover, the French Cleat system is well-known and widely used. It's like the perfect playground for what we're doing. We're tweaking how things hook together and trying out different ways to make the user experience even better.

Interface / Board

To Ensure a seemless user experience without any annoyances, the board`s proportion and interface elements with the slots are critical.

Bringing the focus back to the material, adding thickness to the shelves is essential to enhance stability and ergonomic handling. The overall shape allows for creative freedom while maintaining precise angles for seamless manufacturing.

Possibilities Beyond

Bringing the concept to life in the actual material required a diverse skill set and the use of various machines, including CNC milling, SLA 3D printing, vacuum forming, and ultimately, the growth of Mycelium.
